My current set up started out as quite a modest solution. I upgraded from a Lumix FZ-10 super-zoom which had served me well for many years when I felt that the low light performance of the entry level DLSRs had improved to be a sufficiently large step forward to justify the investment. I did my research and selected a Canon T2i with the kit lens and a 55-300mm zoom. This served me well from 2010 until 2015 when I finally opted to upgrade my lenses to "faster" glass to improve the amount light getting into the camera. I still run the T2i body but with a Sigma 50-150mm f2.8 and a Sigma 17-50mm f2.8. The longer zoom is what I use for the games but the shorter lens is also very useful for team pictures and medal shots at tournaments.
This gives a very effective set up for modest money (particularly when you the lenses used) and allows me to keep learning. I think I am getting close to the limits of this set up and I dream of upgrading to a 7D mkII... but this is out of budget range at the moment.
Whatever camera you have, if you want to take better pictures of your player on the ice, follow along, challenge yourself and hopefully we'll take some better pictures together.
